National Volume Observations
Hospital volumes rebounded from the negative trends seen last month and continue to outperform budget expectations. Patient days, discharges, adjusted patient days, and OR minutes were all up year over year and/or month over month. In addition to volume increases, length of stay was down. These trends typically would drive strong financial performance over the near term, and will continue to be monitored in the coming months. One concerning trend is OR minutes, which declined month over month for the second straight month, underperforming budget in both. The outperformance of adjusted patient days and adjusted discharges shows that the growth of hospital outpatient business continues its upward trend, building further stability into the long-term financial picture.
